If you have Sciatica and are considering Steroid Injections then you need to read this. A new study published on November 13,2012 in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine has found that after a year there was no difference in leg pain, back pain or disability between people who had injections and those who didn’t. The Research was performed on a big number of Sciatica sufferers (3100 patients) and across 23 Clinical Trials.
The study showed that the injections “offered only small, short-term improvement in pain and disability for people with sciatica and had no long-term effect”. This Research has even more relevance given the recent outbreak of fungal meningitis from tainted Steroid Injections in America in September 2012. The outbreak till now has killed 32 people and sickened 438.
My interpretation of this research is that Steroid Injections for Sciatica are effective as a way to reduce pain in the first couple of weeks but offer little more than that.
As a Chiropractor here in Madrid it’s no surprise that I favour natural solutions for Sciatica. For me the best plan for somebody suffering with Sciatica is to start with less invasive and lower risk treatments before using more permanent and higher risk solutions.

Whiplash or Cervical Acceleration Deceleration (CAD) is a very common problem that people struggle to find help with. Treating Whiplash depends greatly on the degree of damage.
For simpler cases Ice, pain and anti-inflamatory medication and cervical collars are often tried. More serious cases require a more focused and directed approach. In my experience for these kinds of cases treatment of the muscles, ligaments and joints of the neck is the best way to get resolution.

C5-C6 Herniated disc’s is one of the most common levels for Herniations. This is because its the joint in your neck with the most movement forward and backwards. This means this joint and Disc get put under the most strain.
Probably the most common problem with bones, muscles and ligaments is scar tissue. When there is scar tissue it means the parts of the body affected cannot work as they are supposed to.
The consequence is more stress or load on other areas that produce many problems. Problems like Herniated Discs and Sciatica can be attributed to excessive load on the Discs or joints in the spine.
I created the following Infographic to show the three ways that scar tissue can form in a muscle.

The Sciatic nerve goes from the bottom of your back down the back of your leg to your foot. If the nerve gets stuck or pinned anywhere between the foot and the lower back then that tension or irritation will typically produce Sciatica. This is one of the most common causes of Sciatica yet it is typically overlooked.
Spasms of muscles in the neck or upper back need to be treated correctly or else you run the risk of them returning. In the same way that taking pain killing pills when you have Back Pain is just hiding the problem, you don’t want to just stop the muscle spasms. Massaging the muscle spasm or taking muscle relaxants may give you some temporary relief but they are a very superficial and short sighted solution.
With the Olympics underway and the Track and Field soon to start I ran across this article.
It is about how Usain Bolt uses Chiropractic to improve his performance.
This could explain why a few of my patients seem to be able to outrun the Women “giving” Rosemary at the Retiro Park.
